Understanding Wyoming's Elk Tag System
Wyoming offers some of the best elk hunting in the country, but drawing a nonresident tag requires strategy, patience, and good timing.
Here’s what you need to know to start building a plan:
Two Nonresident Tag Types
Wyoming splits its nonresident elk tags into two pools:
Regular Draw Tag – Standard fee, majority of tags available
Special Draw Tag – Higher fee, fewer applicants, slightly better odds
Each pool uses the same draw system, but applying for the special draw can give you a slight edge, especially in popular units.
Preference Points: The Key to the Draw
Wyoming uses a preference point system for nonresident elk hunters. The more points you have, the better your odds—simple as that. You can buy one point per year, typically during July–October.
Here’s how it works:
75% of tags go to the highest point holders
25% are awarded randomly, meaning even first-time applicants have a small chance
How Many Points Do You Need?
For the General Elk Tag (valid in multiple units, including Unit 70):
Regular Draw: You’ll likely need 5+ points to draw with confidence
Special Draw: Usually takes 4 points to be competitive
For limited-quota trophy units, you may need 10+ points, depending on the unit and season.
Maximize Your Strategy
Want to boost your odds? Here’s how:
Buy a point every year, even if you don’t plan to hunt
Apply in the Special Draw if you can afford the extra fee—fewer applicants means better odds
Partner with a guide in a general unit like Unit 70, where great hunting is available without needing max points
General vs Limited Quota Tags
General Tag: Valid in dozens of solid elk units (including Unit 70). Great for public land hunters and those with fewer points.
Limited Quota Tags: Targeted for specific high-demand units. It may take years of point building, but it can offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Book Your Hunt While You Wait
Many hunters spend years building points without a clear plan. Why not book a guided hunt in a general unit while your points stack up?
At Graylight Outfitters, we guide in Unit 70—a general unit with wilderness access, high bull opportunity, and the rare chance to rifle hunt the rut.
